Opinion
What is the most frequent cause of dry eye amongst patients you have treated?
The most common cause of dry eye that I see is lid disease, i.e. blepharitis, meibomitis, etc. I have found that when I look for lid disease I often find it. It does not have to be severe in nature to have a significant impact on the ocular surface by disrupting the tear layer. When the lid disease is treated appropriately the dry eye problem will often resolve itself.
What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients?
Due to the answer in question #1 I most often advise patients in treatment of their lid disease. Once the lid disease is under control I can further evaluate the need for other dry eye treatment modalities such as medical therapy and/or punctal plugs.
What makes you exceptionally well qualified to help dry eye patients?
I am a dry eye sufferer myself so I have tried many of the treatments available. I have experienced most all of the symptoms that patients come to me complaining of. When a patient describes what they are seeing or feeling I have an understanding of those things.
I have managed many dry eye cases, and have tried all of the current therapies available for the condition. I have developed a step-by-step process of evaluating and treating this disease, and have found a great deal of success with the process that I use. Patients have found a decrease in their symptoms, and most have been able to be symptom free the majority of the time.
