Opinion

What is the most frequent cause of dry eye amongst patients you have treated?

The most frequent cause of dry eye in my practice is unrecognized meibomitis. The inflammatory process in "dry eye" has two components. Addressing the tear deficiency is only half the problem.

What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients?

The most common advice that I give to my patients is simple - the goal is less frequency of symptoms and less intensity of symptoms - but you must be patient.

What makes you exceptionally well qualified to help dry eye patients?

I have close to 30 years of clinical experience. I am a fellowship trained corneal specialst. I lecture in this area in my capacity as site director for a major teaching hospital and residency program. I am one of the few corneal specialists who enjoy cornea as opposed to refractive surgery.

What are some of your favorite products for dry eye (Rx, OTC, consumer)?

There are no favorite products. Each patient has his own unique issues. I use a stepwise approach to therapy - using all the modalities at my disposal.
