Opinion:

What is the most frequent cause of dry eye amongst patients you have treated?

One of the largest groups of dry eye patients in my practice are peri-menopausal women. The hormonal changes can change the tear film leading to an unprotected ocular surface, irritation and risk of eye infection.

What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients?

I am often encouraging dry eye patients to evaluate their environment, including repositioning of air conditioning vents in the car, and if they sleep with a ceiling fan, to turn it on reverse. I am often encouraging patients to increase their water consumption and to increase their consumption of Omega 3s.
