Opinion
What is the most frequent cause of dry eye amongst patients you have treated?
I don’t think there is any single top cause of dry eye, because so often dry eye is a multi-factorial problem. That being said, I think post-menopausal hormonal changes, medication side effects, and eyelid disease are probably among the top three causes that I treat.
What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients?
I tell almost everyone to increase their Omega-3 fatty acid intake in the form of flax seed oil capsules. I find that it is extremely well tolerated, has almost no side effects, and has remarkable anti-inflammatory benefits.
What makes you exceptionally well qualified to help dry eye patients?
I have completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease, with a large portion of the non-surgical training encompassing the evaluation and treatment of dry eye. More importantly, though, I have an interest in helping people with dry eye. Many doctors find dry eye a nuisance complaint that they hope will go away with a sample bottle of artificial tears. For those people that have tried that and are still suffering, I would like to be able to work with them to find relief.
