Opinion
What is the most frequent cause of dry eye amongst patients you have treated?
Gender: 75% of my dry eye patients are female. This is largely due to hormonal changes that women experience. The good news is that women respond to treatment of dry eye.
What advice do you most frequently find yourself giving to dry eye patients?
Use warm compresses twice a day for 5 minutes a day, followed by massaging of lid margins.
Do you have a dry eye "hot button"?
There usually is an eyelid disease such as blepharitis, meibomitis or ocular rosacea that needs to be treated first before considering tear stimulating products such as Restasis. If you don't treat the eyelid disease first, Restasis will not be very effective.
What makes you exceptionally well qualified to help dry eye patients?
I look for dry eye conditions in all my patients. Even before they step into the exam room every patient is given a short dry eye questionnaire. I review the history and look to see if any pre-existing systemic conditions and/or medications exist that may cause dry eye conditions. I am always surprised how many optometrists and ophthalmologists do not treat dry eye, since I know 20 to 30 million Americans are affected and many are not treated simply because their eye care practitioner is not routinely checking for dry eye signs and symptoms.
What are some of your favorite products for dry eye (Rx, OTC, consumer)?
OTC drops: Systane Ultra, Optive and Soothe XP
Rx drops: Restasis, Azasite and Lotemax
Oral OTC: Medical grade Omega-3
Oral Rx: Low dose doxycycline
